Easter is quickly approaching.  Children anxiously awaiting the Easter Bunny look forward to the surprises he will bring.  Some create plans on how to find the most eggs, others look forward to the traditional basket filled with more yummies than one could hope for and some plead with all their might for a real, live Easter Bunny of their very own.  Oh Mommy, pleeeeeease!  Pet stores, feed stores, newspaper ads offer cute, adorable little baby bunnies; they are in abundance this time of year and cheap.  How much effort can a little fuzzy guy or gal be, right?  Probably more than you realize.  Did You Know?

From the rescue perspective, Easter is a time of year that marks increased rabbit breeding and the soon to follow "Easter Dump Season."  All too often this is the most prominent time of year when young rabbits are purchased on impulse by adults who are uninformed and unprepared to meet the requirements that come with the commitment of welcoming a rabbit into their family.  Children who begged and pleaded with all their hearts often become bored with the rabbit and resentful for having to care for it.  Parents often become frustrated with their children when they lose interest and become slack and uncooperative in their responsibilities for caring for the rabbit.  The rabbit matures and with that comes hormones.  This can cause the once adorable, cute, friendly bun to be aggressive and protective of his/her surroundings.  Spraying with urine is also quite common in an unaltered rabbit once sexually mature.  These rabbits often end up in shelters or worse released to the wild.  This is what we refer to as the "Easter Dump Season."  Typically, it is heaviest a couple of months after Easter when the children are getting out of school and vacations are planned.

The Columbus House Rabbit Society, back in 2002, began the Make Mine Chocolate campaign with the hope of encouraging local would be impulse bunny purchasers to instead buy chocolate bunnies for their children rather than a live rabbit.  This year they are going national with their campaign and have invited rescue organizations across the country to help get their message out.  Rabbit Haven has joined with them in this years Make Mine Chocolate campaign.  Please visit their official web site for more information. http://www.makeminechocolate.org

Won't you also consider making a donation this Easter to a local rabbit shelter/rescue organization to help with this years "Easter Dump Season?"  These abandoned rabbits will need your help as many of them arrive in less than adequate health.

Thank you and here's to a chocolate Easter!
