Rabbit Haven
Gig Harbor, WA

A shelter and sanctuary for unwanted and mistreated rabbits … until they all have homes.

THERE WERE GOOD TIMES WHEN THE RENO RABBITS FIRST ARRIVED (see pictures & story down below).  WE HAD SUCH VERY HIGH HOPES FOR THEIR WELFARE AND HAPPINESS.  UNFORTUNATELY THE RABBITS WERE CARING SEVERAL DISEASES THAT WERE HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS AND WITH 35 RABBITS ALREADY DOWN & IN THE MEDICAL WARD, WE HAD TO ASK BEST FRIENDS TO COME HELP.  MUCH TO OUR DISTRESS & SADNESS THIS TURNED INTO A VERY BAD SITUATION WITH BEST FRIENDS TRYING TO SNEAK THE RABBITS BACK INTO UTAH AND GETTING CAUGHT.  THEY THEN TURNED THE TABLES ON RABBIT HAVEN AND TRIED TO BLAME US FOR THE ILLNESSES, ETC.  WE WERE SO SAD THAT A GREAT PLACE LIKE BEST FRIENDS WOULD TURN TO THESE TACTICS AND TRY TO COVER UP THE PROBLEMS.

WE ASK YOUR HELP IN WRITING TO BEST FRIENDS AND ASKING THEM TO START TREATING THEIR RABBITS BETTER, AT LEAST AS WELL AS THEY TREAT THE DOGS & CATS.  THEY HAVE PROMISED TO BUILD A NEW RABBIT BARN FOR YEARS & YEARS BUT IT KEEPS BEING SET A SIDE SO THAT THEY CAN BUILD MORE PLACES FOR THE DOGS & CATS.  RABBITS DIE EVERY YEAR THERE FROM HEAT STROKE & FLY STRIKE.  THEY HAVE NO RABBIT VET NOR DO THEY EVEN HAVE A FACILITY IN THE BUNNY BARN TO TAKE CARE OF SICK RABBITS.  PLEASE TELL THEM THAT THEY MUST MAKE IT BETTER FOR THE RABBITS AND THAT YOU WILL NOT BE MAKING DONATIONS UNTIL THEY DO.  SOMEONE HAS TO SPEAK FOR THESE POOR CREATURES & BEST FRIENDS IS SUPPOSE TO BE THE BIGGEST NO KILL SHELTER IN THE UNITED STATES AND THEY NEED TO MAKE RABBITS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE DOGS & CATS.

THE RENO BUNNIES HAVE ARRIVED!!

Rabbit Haven is helping Best Friends in the Great Reno Bunny Rescue. (To read more about the Reno Rescue, see link below)  Best Friends contact us and ask how many bunnies we could take.  We told them about 100 and they talked us into 200!!  So Best Friends helped finance a safe & predator proof enclosure for the bunnies and got everyone spayed & neutered. This has been a HUGE undertaking for us but Rabbit Haven is committed to be there for bunnies in need and these bunnies certainly are.

The Great Bunny Rescue of 2006: News

Sue scrabble day & night for 2 weeks getting everything ready for the bunnies arrival.  Not only was there the fence to build but also a medical building, feeding stations, various shelters and a trail around the enclosure so that we could feed and care for all these bunnies.

It was a tremendous and very stressful task for Rabbit Haven but once the bunnies arrived, it was all worth it.  It is just wonderful to go out and walk around with all the bunnies.  Most of them now feel safe and even though most will not let you pet them, they will come up and get a carrot out of your hand or just hang out around you.  When Sue goes out to feed the veggies everyday, she says it is like a huge furry moving carpet following her around.  With the bunnies feel safe and letting us be around them, it will help us to keep them all healthy since we are able to check most of them out everyday.  So far only one medical problem.  A little black bunny with a very terrible abscess from a bite that she probably got before coming to Rabbit Haven.  She was rushed to the vets Saturday night and had surgery.  She is now in foster care and is doing great.  Not only is she doing great, she is very friendly and we will be able to put her up for adoption once she is all healed up.  So a very happy ending to a sad story.

With all these bunnies, along with the 45 abused bunnies from the Tacoma Humane Society, also comes a lot more cost.  Donations are much needed for the cost of food, hay & medical.  If you would like to donate to Rabbit Haven you can do so by either check, PayPal or Just Give, see icons under the Online Donations on the left hand side of this page.
