There are challenges that come with young ones. An obvious one is that they each will need to be altered. This past summer when Teresa came in tow with Shasta, McKinley, two litters and a third litter she gave birth to shortly after arriving at the Sanctuary, numbers quickly added up to 27 surgeries. The person who deposited his rabbits here left a $100.00 contribution. The surgery bill for altering alone came to $1,620.00. For this year, the numbers increased with Charlotte and her six little ones that came from the Tacoma Humane Society three days after Charlotte gave birth. With no financial support contributed on their behalf, their spays and neuters added up to an additional $420.00. Next came the Lion Head mom and her six babes in tow from a Seattle based animal facility. That is an additional $420.00 in altering expenses to come. These figures do not included the young and adult buns that also came to know Rabbit Haven as their home this year and who also required altering. The second challenge with babies is creating spaces to enable separating as they begin to mature into sexual maturity. At right around four months of age, it is mandatory that boys be separated from the girls. Social issues within these groups can easily dictate more dividing being necessary. There are more considerations and expenses beyond what is mentioned here. Our goal though for these galleries, is to direct focus on the subject of altering pets to help combat the overpopulation issues that we're facing each and every day. While we hope you enjoy seeing all the pictures of our wonderful baby residents, we also hope that it will help inspire you to actively take part in making a difference. There are many ways you can choose to positively enable a change for the better.
